DEVOTIONAL #3

Written by Timothy Brainard

Today’s spark is the phrase “This Is the Golden Age.” How does it feel to read those words? How does it feel to even just imagine them as factual? How would it feel if they were true, right now? We have been trained to argue with ideas such as these, because “the Golden Age” must be “some other time.” It must have been “behind us” or it must be coming “later” – a far-distant possibility we could not hope to witness while alive. (We’ve learned to think of “Heaven” this way, too.) The fact is that we value the idea of a “someday” far more readily than any living Now. We daydream of a “Golden Age” while navigating blindly streets that have been paved with Gold on our behalf. The Truth is that each moment is communicating Beauty – every Now is blooming lavishly with Good. The problem isn’t in the world we happen to encounter, but in how we’ve come to think about the Miracle we occupy right now. Imagine dedicating your existence to the making of an origami masterpiece – intended for a loved one as a beautiful and intricate surprise. Imagine hiding love notes that can only be uncovered as the masterpiece is thoroughly explored. Imagine the excitement of delivering this gift to the specific individual you spent this time preparing to surprise. Imagine if they took it, shrugged, and placed it on a shelf while thinking, “Maybe next time it will be a car.” The point is that we have been misdirected by ideas that estrange us from the best of what we value – as if we were somehow distant from the Prize. But there is no such distance. Every moment shares its Richness. We are swimming in the evidence we seek. This truly is the Golden Age. A treasure trove awaits us. Heaven is the Ground we stand on. We have only to appreciate the Gift.
